Last poem, I promise.

In the quiet of the nighttime,

I sit and watch you slumber.

Bright lights embrace your image,

But leave the room in shades of umber.

Machines to keep us company,

I listen to them sigh.

They seem to say, “Give up, give up,

You know he’s going to die.”

The doctors say that talking

May keep you here with me.

But the things I should have told you

Are now not meant to be.

I can tell you that your friendship

Has held me safe and warm.

And given me a shelter

From the fierceness of the storm.

I can talk about your laughter

And the dragons it can slay.

Your smile that brings the sun out

On a dark and hopeless day.

That you’re the one who guards my back

At the slightest sign of danger.

Who makes sure I don’t suffer loss

At the hands of any stranger.

When I’m helpless or all alone,

You’re the one I always call.

I can trust you to come to me,

Even if it takes your all.

I can’t tell you what I’m going to do

When you’ve gone away.

I haven’t got the strength to face

The price I’ve yet to pay.

There’s one thing it’s too late to say,

The thing I most regret.

I guess I still can say it,

You haven’t left me yet.

I’ve found you mean so much to me.

This truth I almost missed.

I’ve found the soul I thought I’d lost,

My reason to exist.

No, I didn’t find it in the heart

Of anybody new.

You’ll be shocked when I confess

The one I love is you.

If you can find your way back

To this world I know is cold,

I promise you my life,

My heart you’ll always hold.

Until my time to join you,

Your soul will heaven keep.

But in the quiet of the nighttime,

I sit and watch you sleep…dararose
