Starsky thinks about love.

Sex is great, no doubt about it. But sex is not love or being loved. The feel of two strong arms surrounding him with care, love and devotion meant more to him than the physical arousal their love also produced.

The warmth of expression in a shared glance always melted the protective wall their job often built. Gave them the strength and courage to keep on going, knowing they were not alone in their frustrating efforts to “keep the peace”.

Their ability to meet each other’s needs, to know just what was required to see them through the days, and nights, only deepened the bond that drew them together. The unspoken respect for the strengths of the other balanced their relationship and kept them from constantly questioning the other’s nature.

Their friends and colleagues had long ago accepted their intuitive response to the dangers that surrounded them, both on the job and off, most appreciating that it was what made them so unique.

They had entered their new relationship as a natural step in the evolution of their long established friendship and brotherly devotion, their overwhelming passion in each other seeming to be the end of the long road home.

He never analyzed the whys and wherefores of the relationship, secure in the fact that his heart and soul belonged to Hutch in a way that defied logic and rules. He was surprised at first that the morality the majority of society demanded of its men and women failed to bother him. But, he believed in love, compassion, understanding and the basic goodness of the human spirit, and he believed in what they shared his demons long ago fought and banished. Hutch fulfilled all the needs his love-starved life demanded, and returned them twice fold. Sometimes he thought love was too mild a word to even begin to describe what he felt. It went beyond mortal perception and sailed off into heaven’s realm, and how do you explain that!

Love lived in them and spread from them to all they encountered. It made it easy for them to accept and deal with the darkness that often dwelt in others, and to help in whatever way they could. It was a weapon in their fight to stay alive, the most potent weapon in their arsenal, and made friends of strangers and enemies.

For the most part it confounded others, left them pondering the reason for the unexpected empathy. The more insightful might figure it out, but felt no distaste or abhorrence for when they thought about it, it was Starsky and Hutch. It was what had been a part of them from the beginning, hiding even from them.

They were a couple, a duo, twined souls or whatever, joined in ways that continued to mystify them.

And so they lived their lives, as content and happy as the gods could make them.

How could sex improve that!
