If We Were Not Here

Would we still be Me and Thee?

We have been on these streets for a long time. You there and I here, side by side, fighting the injustices of this hell we call our home. Always ready to stand by each other through our greatest joys and our deepest sorrows. We would fight to our last breath if need be, till we can’t fight any more, and then we still keep trying.

If there is pain, there is a touch to ease it. If the heart and soul are unsettled, then there are words to comfort, and if there are no words, then just a glance will settle the storm inside–a connection that brings strength, courage and trust when none can be found in the world around us.

Yet I wonder, if we were not here, if the choices we made in our younger years had set us on different paths, would those paths have ever crossed. If they didn’t, would there be emptiness in our lives? Would we feel as if something or someone was missing? Would we even notice?

And if Destiny still allowed us to meet in our different lives, whatever they were, would there still be a connection? Would the trust, love, and friendship that we depend upon in the here and now to stay alive and keep us sane, would it still be there?

Would we share our lives, share our friends? Would our families spend time together? Would we tell each other our deepest fears and our darkest secrets? Would we still be Me and Thee?

I think about this and a million other questions concerning who we are and what we mean to each other. And as I look over to you, our eyes meet and I get my answer. Yes, there would always be a Me and Thee even if we were not here.
