Summer Lovin’, Had Me a Blast

Starsky and Hutch prepare to watch the fireworks–and make some of their own.

Written for a twenty minute fic challenge.

“Gotta have candy, Hutch,” Starsky assured his partner with a lopsided grin. “It’s part of the…whadda call it, gestate.”

Hutch snorted inelegantly. “Gestalt, Doctor, or else you’ll be birthing babies at the fireworks.”

Starsky dumped his load of blankets in Hutch’s arms, shouldering a cooler and tucking two pillows under his arm. “You never had candy on a summer night under the stars?”

“As I’ve told you before, mushbrain.” Hutch toted the blankets to the car, stowing them in the backseat. “My mother thought we’d all be fat, so candy and sweets were severely restricted.”

“That completely explains your personality.” Starsky nodded, dumping his load on top of the blankets. “Not enough sugar when you were a kid.”

“I hardly think that’s a bad thing.” Hutch smoothed his hand down his flat abdomen.

Starsky watched admiringly for half a second before tracing his fingers down the same path, ending slightly lower than Hutch’s fingers had, at his groin. He squeezed very gently.

Hutch sucked in air with a slight yelp. “We won’t make it to the fireworks if you keep doing that,” he said in a slightly higher register than usual.

Chuckling, Starsky leaned in to plant a kiss right below the blond mustache. “I know some secluded spots where we can do it right under the display, with the Star Spangled Banner pounding in our ears.”

“What are we waiting for, then?” Hutch jumped into the Torino, licking his lips as if still tasting sweetness of Starsky. “Y’know, I liked that candy.”

“You didn’t have any yet,” Starsky scoffed, driving down the road. The fireworks could be seen from all over, as long as you were up on a hill or flat plain near the fairgrounds. He knew of a location just off the road minutes from his house with a grand view of the Bay City valley. Los Angeles lights twinkled to the north and the ever-crowded freeway to San Diego snaked to the south.

“This is nice,” Hutch said when Starsky pulled the car off the curved street into dry brush.

Summer conditions in Southern California where it didn’t rain for months left grass brittle and brown, devoid of moisture, but the olive green Eucalyptus and oaks sheltered the spot. Despite the heat of the day, the air was pleasantly cooler as the sun went down in the west, painting the Pacific Ocean with gold, rose and orange.

Starsky spread the blankets on the ground while Hutch investigated what Starsky had brought.

“A couple of beers, a tub of popcorn, and chocolates,” Starsky recited as Hutch laid them out.

Above them, the first squib launched into the sky over the water, a vibrant red and blue explosion highlighting the darkening colors of the sunset as night flowed in.

Starsky picked up a chocolate, biting half and then placing the other half against Hutch’s lip. “This is just the beginning, lover,” he promised.
