Hutch’s thoughts as he races to get back to Starsky after Dobey’s warning.

Originally published in the Starsky and Hutch gen anthology zine LA Vespers 1 in 1979.

“I think you’d better get down here
right away, Hutch.”

Running,
legs pumping,
every part of my body racing
towards… what?
Oh God, please let him be alive.
You know I can’t…
if you take him….
Don’t think about that.
Just keep running.

“Starsky’s gonna die, Hug.”

How could I have said that?
Even for a minute,
how could I have believed it?
You wouldn’t do that,
leave me all alone,
would you, buddy?
After all,
I still owe you that
three-course….
Sweet Jesus!
Hang on, Starsk, please.
I’m almost there.

“I’ll be damned if he isn’t alive.”

Heart pounding,
lungs almost bursting,
crashing through one last door
ike a bat out of hell—
to find a doctor
telling me the best news
I’ve ever heard in my life.
“He’s alive.”
It’s gonna be all right.
Don’t look so surprised, Doc.
He wouldn’t have gone anywhere
without me.
I wouldn’t let him.
