In sprawling sweltered heat the city lies;
Her weary, battered masses wait in vain
For less untempered weather. Unmasked skies
Lend gleeful, hot assistance to the wane
Of spirits. But, with you alongside all…
Your face at once outshines the harsher glare
And mingles warmth and calm; your eyes recall
The muted breeze of dusk. When passions flare
Beyond control, you fast remain a grove
Of cooling fire that, gently hushed, ignites.
Despite the sun that follows us above,
You prompt my heart to dream of moonlit nights.
We pass our daylight hours in scorching blaze,
But I am lulled in shelter all the while;
And afternoons go by as I, for days,
Lie spellbound by your orphic midnight smile.
