After an exhausting day of moving to their new house, Hutch has a very confused dream. Was it real?

Hutch carried the last box into the living room and dumped it precariously on the pile in the middle of the room. Looking around for a place to collapse, he decided that he was too tired to move the stuff off the sofa, so he stretched out on the floor.
“Are you comfortable?” Starsky dropped his load near the rest and came to look down on his partner.
“No, and I may never be comfortable again. I hurt in places that I wasn’t sure could hurt.”
“So why’re you lying on the floor? I’d think that the couch would be more comfortable.”
“It would be, but some idiot put boxes on it.”
“Hmm… Wonder who that was?” Starsky attempted to look innocent, something he had perfected over the years that the two had been partners.
“Well, it wasn’t me, and I’m not moving it.”
Instead of answering, Starsky headed to the back of the small house.
“Hey, where’re you going? I was complaining here.” Hutch sat up, stifling a groan. It was one thing to complain, but another to let Starsky know that he really hurt.
“To put the bed together,” his partner yelled.
Sighing, Hutch pulled himself to his feet. “Why? We still have at least three loads, and it’s only early afternoon.” He leaned against the door and watched Starsky wrestle with the head of the brass bed.
His partner gave him a wicked grin. “‘Cause, if you’re going to collapse on me, I’d rather it was in bed. Then I can have my evil way with you.”
Hutch felt the blood rise to his face. They had been lovers for six months now, and he was still amazed at how easily Starsky had accepted the change in their relationship. Ducking his head, he went over to help with the headboard.
“Are you blushing, babe?” There was both humor and love in the other man’s voice.
“Stupid, isn’t it?” He knew that it was useless to deny it.
“Naw, I think it’s kinda of sweet and sexy.” Starsky slid a hand around the back of Hutch’s neck and pulled his head close. “It makes me want to do this.” His lips nibbled on Hutch’s, his tongue seeking entrance.
Moaning softly, Hutch opened his mouth and sucked the seeking tongue inside.
Starsky’s other hand moved into Hutch’s hair and he pulled the taller man tight against him. When Hutch’s hands moved to caress Starsky’s ass, there was a loud crash as the headboard fell over.
The two men sprang apart, laughing slightly. “I guess we should do only one thing at a time.” Hutch bent over to pick up the headboard, wincing slightly.
“Yeah, and as much as I’d like to kiss you, I also want a bed to sleep in tonight.” Starsky’s words trailed off as he caught the wince. “Hey, babe. Why don’t I put the bed together, and you see to dinner? Let’s have an early night.”
“What about the other three loads?”
“We have both apartments until the first; let’s not kill ourselves. Everything that I want is here already.” He wiggled his eyebrows at Hutch.
“It makes sense to me. I’ll start the steaks.”
“Now you’re thinking, blondie.”
Hutch started out the door, but stopped. “Starsk, can I ask you something?”
Starsky looked up from attaching the bed rails. “Anything.”
“How come this is all so easy for you?” At his lover’s look of incomprehension, he continued. “Becoming lovers, changing what we do on the force, moving in together.”
Starsky rocked back on his heels and looked up at Hutch. “Where do you want me to start?”
“The job.”
“Even before Gunther decided to take his revenge, I knew that the job was killing both of us.” He held up his hand to stop Hutch from speaking. “You knew it before I did, but the fact was it was killing us emotionally as well as physically. When the doctor told me that I couldn’t do the things that I used to, I was relieved, especially when the jobs in Juvie opened up. I really like doing the things that we’re doing now, especially the prevention stuff.”
“So do I,” Hutch said softly.
“As for being lovers and moving in with each other… We’ve had everything but the physical relationship for years. You were always the person that I wanted to spend my free time with, that I turned to when I was miserable. The night that Huggy set off the sprinklers in the hospital and you snuck back in and kissed me goodnight, I realized that you were the missing part of me, my Ying, my other half, my… ”
“I get the point.”
“Once I let myself think that way, it seemed so logical that I couldn’t figure out why we had never done it before. I was really relieved to find out that you were thinking the same way.” Starsky attached the footboard. “Although you would’ve saved us a lot of pain and misery if you’d told me sooner.”
“You wouldn’t have listened to me!”
“I know.” Starsky shrugged. “Anything else you want to know, blintz?”
“No. I’ll go fix dinner now.”
“Good! I’m starving!”
* * * *
Starsky pushed himself back from the table. “That was really good.”
“You sound surprised.” Hutch stood and started to clear away the dishes.
“I wasn’t sure that you could cook anything but tofu.”
“I can cook; it was one thing that my grandmother insisted that I knew. She made me cook every summer that I spent with her. I also did all the cooking when I was married to Vanessa.”
“You did? Why?”
“She was a terrible cook. The only thing that she could make was pancakes. So she made breakfast on Sundays and special occasions and I cooked the rest of the time.” He piled the dishes in the sink. “Do you want dessert?”
“Yeah.”
“There’s some ice…” His voiced trailed off as Starsky’s hands came around his waist and cradled his cock through his pants.
“I want something tall, blond, and hot.” His teeth nipped at Hutch’s ear as he rocked his hard-on against the seam in Hutch’s jeans.
Hutch gulped for air. “Do we have any of that?” He leaned against his partner and stretched his neck.
“Mmmm… I think so.”
Starsky’s mouth moved to Hutch’s neck. “You taste so good. I can’t get enough of you.” He licked, then bit, a spot on Hutch’s neck.
Hutch shivered and rocked back against his lover, arching his back. As he did so, the muscles in his back pulled tight and he let out an involuntary moan. Immediately, Starsky let go and moved to face him. “What’s wrong?”
“Wrong?” Hutch cautiously moved his shoulder.
“That was a moan of pain, not passion. Where do you hurt?”
“How do you know it wasn’t passion?” Hutch wanted to distract his partner. Starsky the lover was one thing, but Starsky the mother hen was something he didn’t want to face right now.
“Blintz, we’ve been lovers for six months. I know the difference between you feeling passion and pain. Now where do you hurt?”
Hutch stifled a sigh. “My shoulders are tight.”
Starsky reached and rubbed one. “Tight? They’re like granite. Look, go take a hot shower and then I’ll give you a Starsky Special backrub.”
As much as Hutch wanted to argue, his partner’s plan sounded very good. “Okay, but then can we go back to discussing dessert?”
“Plan on it, babe.”
* * * *
Hutch stood in the pounding spray and worked his shoulder until the muscles started to relax. He hated this feeling; just one more reminder that he wasn’t the young cop he used to be.
“Hey, have you washed down the drain, or are you brooding?” Starsky poked his face into the shower. “Just as I thought, brooding.”
Hutch took a deep breath and released it slowly. Denying that he was brooding would just make his partner decide that he needed cheering up. “I was just thinking that I’m not as agile as I used to be.” He turned off the water and pushed back the curtain.
“Who is?” Starsky wrapped one of the huge towels around Hutch, and started to pat him dry.
Hutch closed his eyes, feeling the warmth of the towel and the gentle touch of his lover’s hands. “You’re really good at this.”
“Come on into the bedroom, and I’ll show you how good I can be.” Starsky wiggled his eyebrows again.
“You’re such an idiot.”
“Yeah, but ‘m cute.”
“Well, that’s true.”
Starsky put his hand to his forehead. “I may faint. For once you’re agreeing with me.”
“Brother,” Hutch mumbled under his breath.
Starsky grinned and gave his shoulder a final pat. “You go and get comfortable on the bed and I’ll be right there.”
Hutch went into the bedroom and smiled again. His partner had lit about a dozen candles and spread them all over the room. Unwrapping the towel, he spread it out on the bed and lay face down on it.
“Hmmm … Now that’s a sight to make a grown man weep.” Starsky sat down on the side of the bed. “Now just relax, blintz, and let me rub all your troubles away.”
“I don’t think that you can rub them all away, Starsky.”
“Yeah, but I can at least take care of these.”
Hutch fell silent as his lover’s hands rubbed oil into his shoulders. “That smells different. Is it new?”
“Yeah, it has a vanilla base. I figured that you’d need a massage before the weekend was over. Now hush.”
Hutch closed his eyes and gave himself up to the smell of the oil and the feel of Starsky’s hands. It felt so good that several times he caught himself drifting off to sleep. The third time that he forced himself awake, Starsky said, “Would you stop? Let yourself go to sleep.”
“But I promised that we’d…” A yawn drowned out the rest of the sentence.
“I know, but we have the rest of our lives, and I’d rather make love with you awake and ready. Go to sleep, babe. I’ll see you in the morning.”
* * * *
The sun felt warm on his back as he opened his eyes. Funny, he’d thought that the sheets were blue, not white with lace, but he’d been so sleepy the night before… The shower was running and someone was humming with the radio.
Hutch rolled over and stretched. The room was decorated in blues and greens with a touch of white. On the back of the door hung an Armani suit. He rubbed his eyes and then opened them again as the bathroom door opened.
“You’re finally awake. I was afraid that you were going to sleep all day.” The beautiful brunette had a towel wrapped around her hair and another wrapped around her body.
Hutch just blinked at her. It couldn’t be…
“Ken? Are you awake yet?” Looking concerned, she came to the side of the bed. “I was afraid that you overdid it yesterday, insisting on helping the movers.” Sitting down, she put her hand on the side of his face. “Then once we got into bed, you were a tiger, lover.” She leaned over and kissed him lightly on the lips.
“Vanessa?” His voice squeaked slightly.
She laughed lightly. “Who were you expecting? Do you have another wife?”
“Ah… No… No.”
“You are so cute when you first wake up. You’re always so befuddled.” Vanessa started to towel her hair.
“Well, I certainly feel befuddled now.” He reached up and touched her neck with his hand. It felt silky, the tendrils of her hair felt wet. She felt real. “I had the strangest dream.”
“You were restless last night. Kicking, moaning, and moving quite a lot. Do you remember any of it?” She looked up from drying her hair, her warm brown eyes smiling into his.
“I dreamed that I was a policeman, with a partner whose name was… Oh, it began with an ‘S’.”
“A policeman? I remember when you wanted to go to the academy, but Ken, that was years ago. Why were you dreaming about it last night?”
“I… I don’t know.” He closed his eyes and tried to concentrate. “But I dreamed that I was very close to my partner, and that we had…” His voice trailed off.
“Had what? Another wife?” There was laughter in her voice.
“No, even stranger than that. I dreamed that we’d bought a house together.”
“You and your partner. Just for the record, was your partner male or female?” She smiled at him.
Ken looked at the suit hanging on the back of the door. “Male, I think.”
“You bought a house with your male police partner. Darling, you have the most amazing dreams.”
“I guess I do.”
“Did he have a face?”
Ken concentrated on the suit. “Yeah. You remember when I went to the police academy for an interview? The man that I met coming out of the building?”
“Not really… Wait a second, the rude guy from the east?”
“Yeah, him. I haven’t thought of him in years. I wonder why I dreamed about him last night.”
“You were overtired, and you have a big day coming up in court today. You probably were trying to escape to an easier life.”
“Makes sense.” He stifled a yawn.
“Look, Ken. Why don’t you go back to sleep? It’s only six a.m., and you begin the case against Greenpeace today. I’ll start the coffee and toast and wake you in an hour.”
“That sounds really good.” He snuggled under the comforter. “I’ll take you out to dinner tonight.” He yawned.
“That sounds great, now sleep.” Vanessa kissed him lightly on the lips. “I’ll wake you up, lover.”
Ken closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
* * * *
The light brushing of lips stirred him awake. He opened his eyes carefully. Bright sunlight was pouring into the room. There were boxes piled all over the place, and the sheets were blue. Sitting on the side of the bed in a too-big orange robe was a dark-haired man.
“Hey, sleepyhead. Are you ever going to wake up?”
He closed his eyes and then opened them again. The curly-headed man was still there.
“Hutch?” There was concern in the sapphire eyes. “Are you OK?”
The blond shook his head. “Yeah, I think so. Starsky?”
“Who were you expecting? Do you have another lover that I don’t know about?”
“Ah… No.” He reached out and touched the bare knee closest to him. “Are you real?”
In answer, the darker man leaned over and kissed him deeply, his tongue plunging into Hutch’s mouth. As the kiss broke off, he said in a husky voice, “Does that feel real?”
Panting slightly, Hutch said, “I’m not sure, can we try that again?”
“Gladly.” Dropping his robe on the floor, Starsky lay on top of Hutch and kissed him slowly and deeply. His tongue moved in and out of Hutch’s mouth and his hands caressed his face and neck.
Hutch gave himself to the kiss, sucking on the invading tongue and moving against the beloved body. All too soon the kiss ended.
“You must have had some dream; do you want to talk about it?” Even as Starsky asked the question, his fingers were caressing and pinching Hutch’s nipple.
“Dream? I had a dream?” Hutch pushed up against his lover’s hand. Not waiting for an answer, he pulled on the dark curls, bringing Starsky’s face back to his. This time Hutch controlled the kiss, his tongue leisurely exploring the hot cavern as his hands slide down the graceful back and under the waistband of Starsky’s red bikinis.
Starsky moaned and pushed hard against him. Suddenly Hutch wanted to be buried deep inside of his lover, being seared by his heat. Trying to pull Starsky’s underwear down with one hand, he fumbled to open the bedtable drawer with the other. In his haste, he pulled too hard and the drawer went crashing to the ground. “SHIT!”
Starsky chuckled against him. “Getting a little excited, lover?” His voice was smug.
Hutch growled in answer and turned Starsky so he was in the dominant position.
Starsky smiled sweetly at him. “You think you’re in charge, blintz?”
Hutch was ready to tell Starsky exactly how he was in charge, when he saw the glint in his lover’s eye. Before he could react, Starsky’s wet finger moved up the crack of his ass and rimmed him.
“Oh, God, babe!” Hutch slammed against him.
“Yeah, baby, ride me. Make me come.” Starsky’s voice trailed off in a gasp.
The two men pushed hard against each other until Hutch felt his toes start to curl. Throwing his head back, he yelled as his body spasmed and his hot semen mixed with his lover’s.
Except for panting, the room was silent for a long time. Finally Hutch realized that he must be crushing Starsky, and gathering strength, he rolled off.
“That was… fantastic,” Starsky stated.
“Yeah,” Hutch agreed. After a silence he said, “I was so relieved to see you when I woke up.”
“I gathered as much. What was the dream about?” He propped himself up on his elbow and traced Hutch’s profile with his finger.
“I dreamed that I was still married to Van, and that I was a corporate lawyer.” His tone of voice made it sound like a fate worse than death.
“Was I in the dream?”
“You were mentioned; someone I had met during my thoughts of becoming a policeman.” Hutch shook his head. “It was so real, Starsky. Even in my dream I kept wondering where you were. Another strange thing was that Van was really nice.”
“Didn’t you once say that she was always nice, when she got her own way?” At Hutch’s nod, Starsky continued. “Well then, she must have been really nice, because she sure got her own way.”
“I guess you’re right.”
“Someday you’ll remember, my blond friend, that I am always right.”
“And so modest,” Hutch said admiringly.
“One of my greatest qualities.”
“Well, oh great one, move your body. We have a lot of work to do.” Hutch slapped him lightly on his ass.
“I’ll go start the shower and you start the coffee.” Starsky bounded out of bed.
“I’ll join you.” Hutch also pulled himself up.
“Hey, Hutch?”
“Yeah?”
“Who do suppose will be in the shower when you come in? Me or Vanessa?” Grinning, Starsky disappeared into the bathroom.
Hutch stared after him for a long moment and then, deciding to make the coffee later, followed him into the bathroom. Just to be sure.
