Why don’t you ever ask me for anything…?
Originally published in the Starsky and Hutch gen anthology zine LA Vespers 1 in 1979.
Why don’t you ever ask me for anything?
Maybe then I’d be able to make things
even and get rid of this feeling
of responsibility so I could say
no once in a while.
But you never do.
You just give and give,
demanding nothing in return, and
getting more from me than I’ve
ever given to anyone.
Sometimes I think you know exactly what
you’re doing.
But then you look at me, all innocence
and smiles, and I feel guilty for
doubting you.
So I bide my time, looking for ways to
make it up to you, and once in a
while get my own back.
