Trying to make Dobey happy…

“Damn.”
“What?” asked Starsky, who had been impatiently waiting for Hutch to finish typing. He had plans involving Hutch and this new Italian place that had just opened, followed by other plans. None of which could actually happen unless they managed to make their escape.
“I’m done with the report on the Matheson case.”
“Last time I looked, getting a report done was a good thing,” Starsky said, reaching across to grab the paper out of the typewriter. “Put it on Dobey’s desk and let’s get out of here before he thinks of something else for us to do.”
Hutch’s hand shot out to stop Starsky. “Can’t. It’s too short.”
An opening like that couldn’t be ignored and Starsky didn’t even try to resist. “You weren’t saying that last night.”
Hutch gave his partner a look. “The report, dummy. I still have half a page to go, Dobey’s been complaining about wasting paper so I’ve got to fill it up.”
Starsky wandered around the desk to lean over Hutch’s shoulder. “Did you put in the part about the busted window and the trash out back?”
“Already got the window and there wasn’t much in the trash besides cigarette butts and food wrappers but I’ll put it in.” Hutch resumed the hunting and pecking he called typing.
“What about the other witness?”
“The guy from across the street who didn’t see anything, didn’t want to talk to us, and passed out because he was drunk?
“That’s the one.”
“Good enough,” Hutch said, leaning back far enough to give Starsky a quick smile.
A minute or so more of typing and then…
“Damn.”
“Now what?”
“I’m out of room.”
