Starsky and Hutch reminisce about the past on a sad occasion. Note: The first memory in this story refers to my fic “Easy Riding” which is posted here in the archive, and also on A0#.
Reminiscences 2025
“Robert Redford just died,” Starsky said mournfully.
“I know. He was 89, not that much older than us,” Hutch said glumly.
“Remember him in Butch Cassidy? With Paul Newman? He died too, a few years ago.”
“I know. Remember when we saw that movie together? Up in that little town, when you wanted to get me out of Bay City so Vanessa could take her things?”
“Oh yeah. That was fun. That girl we picked up, what was her name, Jazz?”
Hutch considered briefly. “Razz, I think.”
“Yeah that was it. Our first threesome.”
Hutch looked at Starsky affectionately. “I’d rather have you without the girl in the middle now.”
Starsky gave Hutch a squeeze. “Me too.” There was silence for a moment.
Then Hutch laughed, “Hey, remember Sally Hagan? When we thought she was inviting us for a threesome, and she spent the whole night tossing us around with karate?”
Starsky grinned. “Yeah, pretty annoying then, but funny now.”
“Wonder how she turned out?”
Starsky looked surprised. “You don’t know? She got a bunch of commendations, and ended up pretty high in the vice squad. She’s retired now, like us, of course,” he added.
“Of course. I’m glad she did well. We treated her badly.”
Starsky considered that. “I guess so.”
“Hey,” Hutch said, “Speaking of threesomes, remember Kathy Marshall? The stewardess?”
“Oh yeah. Can’t ever forget her. She was wild.” Starsky smiled approvingly.
“We used to see a lot of her. She was around when the whole thing with Diana Harmon happened.”
Starsky shuddered. “Now there’s a chick I could stand to forget.”
Hutch shook his head. “I can’t forget her. I still get updates on her from Cabrillo.” He sighed. “I guess she’s there for the remainder of her life.”
“Let’s not talk about her,” Starsky said firmly. “She made her own bed, let her lie in it.”
“I still feel guilty. She’s a sad, sick person, Starsk.”
“You couldn’t have known that when you met her,” Starsky objected. “And after all, she tried to kill you!”
Hutch sighed again. “Yeah.”
“So drop the subject. In fact, lets drop this whole conversation! We don’t need to be discussing ‘Chicks we have known’. We have each other now, it’s all in the past.”
Hutch smiled. “You’re right. Pretty far in the past now, too.”
“Now come over here, and kiss me, my big beautiful blond!” Starsky leered suggestively and waggled his eyebrows.
“Not so blond now,” Hutch laughed. “More like, gray.” But he obeyed.
After they broke for air, Starsky said “And let’s not forget the reason we were talking about this at all… Robert Redford. Let’s go watch Butch Cassidy now. We can still go to Bolivia and be bank robbers.”
“And go out in a blaze of glory? I’d rather go peacefully, here, with you.”
Starsky thought about it. “Yeah, I suppose so. As long as we’re together.”
“Always, Starsk. Me and Thee til the end.”
