Author’s Note: I’ve always loved the lyrics of this song. I loved it so much that I played it at my mother’s memorial service. The words reminded me of all the things she did for me in my life. I feel that the lyrics also speak of the love that Starsky and Hutch have for one another.
For all those times you stood by me
Starsky: That time when our brother cops were comin down on me because that lunatic, Prudholm, was killing cops for revenge.
Hutch: When I was about to throw my badge into the ocean, you joined me.
For all the truth that you made me see
Starsky: When you tried to get me to believe that psychic, Joe Collandra, who knew where the girl was being held.
Hutch: You made me see the ugly truth about who Gillian was.
For all the joy you brought to my life
Starsky: The night you made me my favorite meal by candlelight.
Hutch: The day you found a car just like my old one, after it was totaled when I was run off the road.
For all the wrong that you made right
Starsky: When I was drugged with poison and you went out to find the person who did it, saving my life.
Hutch: When you risked everything to help me find Vanessa’s killer.
For all the love I found in you
Starsky: The time I was suffering from the poison, and you held me in that yard behind Janos’s studio.
Hutch: That hug you gave me after I was so distraught over Gillian’s death.
I’ll be forever thankful baby
Starsky: For saving me from Simone Marcus’s cult when they were about to kill me.
Hutch: For coming to save me when I lay dying after my car crash.
You’re the one who held me up
Starsky: After I had collapsed to the ground in pain behind Janos’s studio.
Hutch: When I wanted to drop to the floor after being stabbed by Diana.
Never let me fall
Starsky: You kept me from falling down the stairs when we were coming out of Vic Bellamy’s building.
Hutch: You helped me down from the wall after I went up there to get away from Monk.
You’re the one who saw me through it all
Starsky: Well, to name a few: when I was shot in that Italian restaurant, I was suffering from poison; you were there for me after Terri died; when we found Helen dead; after Rosie left me; and when I was forced to shoot and kill Lonnie Craig.
Hutch: Just to name a few: when I was withdrawing from Heroin, suffering from the plague, when I found Gillian dead in her apartment, Vanessa found dead in my apartment, and they charged me with her murder.
You were my strength when I was weak
Starsky: When I was too weak from that poison to stand on my own.
Hutch: The time I was in that alley, I was paralyzed with fear and wasn’t able to cover you. You talked me through it.
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
Starsky: I was lying in the coma and couldn’t speak; you were there to be my voice.
Hutch: While I lay dying from the plague, you were my voice as you searched for the man who could save my life.
You saw the best there was in me
Starsky: When you gave money to Lijah and that drug-addicted woman.
Hutch: And when you went to speak to Lonnie’s mother.
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
Starsky: When you cupped your hands, so I could climb up to the fire escape to find Anton Rusz.
Hutch: Pushing me up so I could look over that fence to watch Capt. Ferguson and Matt Coyle doing a deal.
You gave me faith ’cause you believed
Starsky: You believed that you’d find the antidote for the poison I was injected with before it was too late.
Hutch: Supporting me when I was afraid to sing on stage and say that line in the western.
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me
Starsky: I wouldn’t be the man I am today without your love, Blintz.
Hutch: And I couldn’t live without your love, Gordo.
