Starsky is finding it hard to relax even though Hutch has recovered from the plague.
Written for the SHFAFF March Fiction Prompt – I made breakfast (but I think I made enough for a small army).
Starsky had been up since six, chopping, slicing, measuring, mixing and doing all things culinary. He was feeling antsy and needed a distraction to calm down. After days of constant movement, chasing down Callendar and then spending time with Hutch at the hospital, the luxury of being motionless felt wrong.
His now healed partner had spent his first night back in his own home and was still asleep. Starsky had slept on the couch just in case Hutch needed anything; whether that was a glass of water or a return trip to the hospital. Hutch had been given the all-clear but to Starsky’s anxious eyes, his partner looked thinner than he should and much too pale. He was determined to feed his partner back to health. Realising he could hear his mother’s voice in his head as he thought this, he chuckled softly at himself. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
Yesterday, he had stocked the cupboards and refrigerator with fresh ingredients and food he knew his partner liked. Plus a few things he liked too. No sense in him starving!
Now, he placed a stack of pancakes on the table and stepped back to admire the table full of breakfast items. He felt Hutch’s presence behind him.
“Morning, pal. How are you feeling?”
“I’m feeling really good,” Hutch said, as he stretched out.
“I made breakfast,” Starsky said proudly.
“I can see that,” Hutch said, with a grin indicating surprise at the amount of food on the table.
“I made enough for a small army!” Starsky said ruefully. “It’s my Mom’s fault,” he added.
Hutch could’ve asked what he meant but somehow he didn’t need to. He walked over to the phone and picked it up.
“Who are you calling?”
“A small army.”
Within minutes, Kiko, Molly and Mrs Ramos were all crowded around Hutch’s table helping to eat Starsky’s breakfast.
Amid the chatter, Hutch caught Starsky’s eye and without speaking said, “Relax now, partner. I’m going to be okay.”
And Starsky responded by taking a deep breath and sitting back on his chair with a relieved smile.
