Slash snippet. Drunken love.
Runaway? Runaway to where? Runaway to nowhere, that’s where. Jupiter? Pluto? Nowhere I can go fast enough, long enough, or far enough to escape this feeling of despair.
Only one way to escape this. Get loaded. Plastered. Drink myself into oblivion. Beer wouldn’t help me escape reality. I hate wine. Whiskey just makes me mean. So ’em trying something new. Tequila. Worm, and all.
It’s a hot summer night. Hutch isn’t home. Probably out with some foxy lady. I don’t know why I came here to drink. Seemed like a good spot. So here I am sprawled out on top the hood of my car leaning up against the glass watching the final embers of the day fade to crimson purple over the canal.
Sigh!
Sick and tired of playing target practice with my heart. The first time you get burned by love its just like taking a bad punch to the gut. You throw up once and its over. Then there’s the second, third, fourth and fifth time you get burned. Hurts so bad you may as well scoop your heart out with a spoon and serve it up char broiled on a bed of lettuce. But, after awhile you harden up and the punches become meaningless. You don’t even feel um anymore.
But this. This is all too new. He doesn’t even know how I feel.
He, meaning my partner, Hutch.
Blond hair, and eyes so blue when he looks at you in that caring way its like being slammed up against a wall, and your breath whooshes from your lungs. It’s a good sort of whoosh. You sure the hell know the guy cares.
Talent. Yep he’s got talent. Can sing like a nightingale. Just one whisper from him takes me aback. Puts me in a whole new category. I’m no longer David Starsky tough, rough, hard hitting, call all the shots, do not pass go, street wise cop. Nope. I turn into this guy who seems to have a hard time not getting all soapy over one word spoken, one breath, or touch by this tall blond guy with bad taste in cars.
I lift the bottle to take yet another hard hit. Hm? Don’t feel a thing. Try that again. I eye the bottle. Eye the worm floating about in sediment at the bottom of the jug. Maybe they put that damn thing in there to kill the alcohol? Another suck of the lime and a swig. I need to get drunk. Loose myself at the bottom of the bottle. Kill this pain somehow.
Hutch means the world to me, man. He makes my heart race so fast. Sometimes I think just a glance to that beautiful man could send me to the hospital. Every time his eye catches mine it sends me into intoxication without the booze. His mouth so vulnerable. His stance straight and powerful. Cool blue eyes that twinkle like the heavens filled with starry light. Oh hell, now I know I’m drunk when I start sounding like a lovesick smut novelist. I knock back another swig.
Headlights pulling up the drive suddenly blinded me, and I choked on my last swallow. Speak of the head honcho. Here he comes now. My gaze transfixed upon that brown heap of his.
“Ugh.” Here it comes. The shakes. The fast racing heart. Cold sweats. No. It’s not the plague, not the flu or the hot tequila night I had indulged myself to much with. It’s Hutch. I told you that man’s going to be the death of me if I don’t come clean soon. Tell him I’m in love with him.
Well, they say when your drunk its like…like.. truth serum, what’s that shit called…… Sodium penathol. Stuff gives you the guts to say what you mean. So here goes everything.
I watched long legs stride over to me, blue eyes raising to the sky. He’s not happy with my current virtuous buzz. Least um here at his place. Could be passed out under the 9th street bridge.
“Starsky, what the hell are you doing?”
I slid off the hood of my car stumbling toward him. Got right up in his face. “Nothin’.”
He waved a hand in front of me or was that two hands? Can’t be sure on that. “God, Starsk you’re drunk.”
“‘Em not.” I gave his right arm a slug. Oops missed. “Ha! Ha! Ha!”
He caught my arm and held me up. “What are you drinking?” He tried to take my bottle. I pulled it away. “Let me see that.” He was angry.
No-way he was swiping my runaway ticket. “S’ mine.”
“What is it?” He asked again.
“Tequila.” I think I spit in his face; as he wiped a drop from the corner of his eye.
“You’re drinking straight tequila? What are you crazy?”
“Not straight. Got this.” I held up a lime stuck it in my mouth sucking deeply. My eyes laughed at him as I watched his lip curl to the sour fruit I sucked on. I then pulled it out and took another slog. “And ’em not crazy.” That was a low blow. You don’t tell a drunk man sitting on the hood of his car, in the middle of the night, parked in his best friends driveway, contemplating his love for him, don’t tell him that his crazy. I slugged more down and came up choking. That’s when he did the Hutchinson sneak, and I was left empty handed. Forced to go cold turkey. My bottle’s contents poured to the ground gone from my sight. “Hey that’s alcohol abuse.” I complained nearly doubling over when I bent down to see where the worm had gotten itself to. I heard if you eat the worm.—
“Lets get you inside pal.” His voice softer.
I was feeling pretty loopy so I let him walk me toward the house. Would of made it too if the ground beneath my feet didn’t pull a fast one on me, and disappear. I plunged to my knees. Then it happened my stomach decided to make an appearance.
I cringed with pain every time I heaved. My throat scrapped raw by the time I was done. Gentle hands lifted me to rocky feet. “Easy partner. Let me get you inside now.”
I tried to tug away again. “Um fine. Just the way…. I…..I…..I’m fine.” Damn I was hammered. I didn’t think I could make it to the house. My legs were like rubber, my head too. I trembled hard.
“Easy. Easy. Go slow.” Hutch’s words were jumbled, but there was a tone of sweetness, and love in his voice.
My anger eased with his. I was crashing hard. “Hush,” I slurred. “Don’t mean to be rude, but I don’t think I’m gonna make it to the….”
My words left me. My feet too. I felt strong arms slip under my kneecaps and swoop me up. My head hanging low. I took one last peak at the twirling sky and moaned. “I gottcha Starsk.” Last thing I heard.

“Ohhhh!” I groaned wrapping my arms around my stomach. “Please tell me you are the ghost of liquor’s past, and I don’t have the worst hang over known to man.”
“Nope.” Came the short reply of my partner. “How ya feel?” His words sharp, and well knowing how the hell I felt.
I felt like I had an all day ticket to ride the carousel, and the operator was making damn sure I got my money’s worth. The room spun around me in a sick blur of color. “Like hell,” I obliged him.
“You deserve to feel like hell buddy. You had no business drinking like that. What are you part camel? You ever hear of alcohol poisoning Starsk?” His finger waved about making me so dizzy I had to shut my eyes. “Now tell me what that was all about will ya. Enlighten me pal.”
Man, he was steamed. “Can’t.” I couldn’t tell him I was in love with him. That I was trying to escape the pain of not being able to come clean.
“You’re good at hiding what you don’t want me to find out, Starsk.”
“What are you talking about.” I barely could creak open an eye.
“You know what I’m talking about pal. Come on say it. Get it out.” I eyed him fear filling my heart. “It’ll be all right buddy just say it. I promise. “Hey, come on. You know you, and me…” His hand brushed against my cheek. “We’re good together.” Hutch spoke with an edge of wonderment in his voice. My body stiffened. I kept a watchful eye on him. “We could be better don’t you agree?”
He lowered his head to mine ignoring my hangover breath. A smile slanted the corners of his mouth upward then he moved in to press his mouth to mine. Like a half starved animal I latched on to him wrapping my arms around his back and pulling him on top of me to the couch.
I pulled slightly away. Not sure of what was happening. Dizzy. “‘S this real or is it a drunken hallucination?” I whispered against his lips.
“Oh it’s real, Starsk. I love you.” My heart was so full of joy it ached. He knew. By hell if he knew. “You alright buddy?” He asked.
“I am now.” His eyes lingered a moment to be sure, then his mouth was back to mine.
My pulse raced. I broke out in sweat. My body trembled like I were an addict. I was an addict. Addicted to my partner. I could scarcely breath. The pure beauty of it all was, he was equally addicted to me.
Magnificent feelings spread through us both as we made love for the first time. There are few seductive pleasures in this world. Hutch is one of them to me. The gentle touch of his passing hand over my skin, the soft texture of his hair between my fingers, a quick glance from pale ice blue eyes so bright they eclipse the sun.
Sigh!
Runaway? Runaway to where? Runaway to nowhere for now; I have his love.

I lay there staring to the ceiling. Hutch asleep soundly. His head nestled upon my chest wrapped in my arms. Wonder what really does happen when you swallow the worm?
That’s all she dreamt again.
