541Hutch provides his own kind of medicine for Starsky.
Even the doctors admitted it worked. Even when Starsky had been in a coma all he had had to do was gently hold and caress his partner’s hand and he would quieten and sink into a healing rest.
It was medicine for them both.
For so many days Starsky had been isolated from him, left in the care of white-coated professionals who never heard his soul crying out searching blindly for proof of his connection to this world.
You could almost hear a sigh of relief from those who seemed to be constantly hovering over Starsky when Hutch was finally allowed to enter and administer his own brand of medicine.
From that time forward Hutch was never refused admittance. Those who were believers recognized the power at work here and gratefully welcomed an ally in the fight for life.
The prejudice that was evident in some could be easily ignored. They would never understand and Hutch had little energy to care, his focus always fully on his partner.
Throughout the early days when the outcome was in doubt, Hutch knew. From the first touch of hands, he felt Starsky melt into him and he into Starsky.
Once again their silent empathy strengthened and gave to each what they most needed.
Hutch found the strength to continue functioning during those crazy days, fulfilling his duty to his partner and his job, quiet determination driving him relentlessly.
And always he returned to his source, adding his special care to the medical regimen that encouraged Starsky’s body to heal.
He would sit, sometimes in the bedside chair sometimes on the bed, his hands and voice caressing the soul in his care. And when the time came that he could look into those eyes again, his undeniable belief in “me and thee” radiated into Starsky from him, his smile adding icing to the cake.
They were tested and came out stronger than before. The strain drove both to the brink of despair at times, as the physical pain of one manifested itself in the heart and soul of the other. But always the love expressed by touch, look, thought and word wrapped them in comfort and courage.
He supposed it had always been that way for them when either was hurt physically or emotionally. Their only true source of comfort had been each other and now, having acknowledged the “forsaking all others” love they shared, it had knocked down all barriers to expose the full power of their spiritual connection.
It was awesome, and his belief in it had defied the mere mortal prognosis of the doctors.
Medical miracle indeed!
