Hutch gets spooked by their mysterious connection.
It had happened again today, only this time he actually heard Starsky’s desperate voice shouting in his mind, “Hutch, get down”. Instinct followed, and as he fell one shot rang out and the surprised intake of breath preceded a body hitting the floor behind him.
From their first association at the academy some kind of a psychic connection existed and only grew stronger with the passing years.
At first he had doubted his own senses as they followed each others lead without conscious thought, seemed to know instinctively what each needed at any given moment.
He had put it down to the intenseness of their job and the training and knowledge they accumulated over the years, and he forgot about it, just accepted the natural connection.
This time though he was left with a hollow disbelief that strained his acceptance and sanity. It scared him, bewildered him and caused him to question his values.
His confusion told him it was wrong to doubt, but his practical side demanded answers and reasons, something solid to grasp onto.
There was a danger in expecting this unknown to always protect them, to be there, to guide them. Faith and trust were one thing, dependency quite another.
He fought his senses with everything he had and began to shut down his feelings, his instincts.
But his other self saw through his curtain of uncertainty, forcing him to face a truth he thought was as solid as the ground he stood upon, the very air he breathed that sustained him.
Two darkened blue eyes looked into his soul, understood his confusion, his guilt, his desperate need to know.
The strength and faith in that soothing voice drew him into a place within himself that he had never recognized before. A place that shone with a glow that came from his heart where love lived, and when the two touched that glow rivalled the sun for brightness and clarity.
The blessing they both received came from what was within, connected by a thread spun of love, devotion, caring and insight that overrode the physical world.
Delivered by angels, gods, powers beyond perception, or fate didn’t matter, what they had encompassed any and all and only required that he believe what couldn’t be explained.
Could he accept what his senses denied? Could he let go of his doubting Thomas philosophy?
Of course he could, for he held in his arms the very thing that proved the solidity of that connection; could feel in the touch, see in the eyes that reflected absolute faith and confidence, in the smile of delight and joy in what they had been blessed with.
No matter what, they had that, and he could only be thankful for it and pray that they would always have it.
