Hutch goes with Starsky to visit a memorial.
For Holocaust Memorial Day & Vietnam Peace Day.
Starsky was waiting by the front door when Hutch arrived. He quietly closed it behind him and joined Hutch in his car. They nodded at each other and shared a look.
They were headed to Sacramento, to the memorial there. It wasn’t the first time they had been and probably wouldn’t be the last.
Hutch remembered the first visit they had made a few years ago. Starsky hadn’t been sure about going, his feet had dragged as they approached and the silence emanating from his usually talkative friend had been deep and anguished. But his steps had been lighter as they came away. For that very reason, Hutch would continue to accompany his friend every year for as long as he wanted to go: anything to help lighten the load.
As they came away, Starsky slung an arm around Hutch’s shoulder and said, “Thanks pal.”
And as the words were totally unnecessary, it somehow made them sweeter and more appreciated.
