The breakers had finally silenced,

And the sun had lived its hour

And was painting the sky in brilliance

With all the strength of its dying power.

The moon was ripe with fullness,

Stars shining bright above the bay.

But still the pair was lingering,

Reluctant to end the day.

The sand was fine and warm,

And their hair was gently teased

By unseen magical fingers

From a blossom-scented breeze.

They sat silently…. close together,

Each pacing his world of thought.

Both feeling the pain of longing

That could only come to naught.

The beautiful tawny angel turned

To the wild and handsome mage.

Eyes the color of a frozen creek

Pierced the deep ocean blue of a sage.

“Buddy” he whispered softly.

“I’ve tried so hard to hang on.

At first it was a fleeting thought

That just as suddenly was gone.

The first day that I met you,

I knew you were special to me.

But I never really imagined

How close two people could be.

We’ve been through a lot together

And it’s plain we’ll endure much more.

But I don’t ever want to lose you.

You’re a part of my very core.

Soul mates, we’re meant to be

And so we’ve always been.

But now I have no idea

Where I end and you begin.

I want….” His courage faltered.

He wasn’t sure what to say.

While he searched for the words he needed,

His partner whispered, “It’s okay.”

So he held his breath and waited.

The one that he loved so near.

He wondered what were those unsaid words

That would have made his message clear.

His waiting wasn’t lengthy,

The other cupped his face

And ran his thumb across the lips

That yearned for that first embrace.

“That’s an easy question to answer.

You don’t even have to be smart.

Me and Thee began the day we met,

But this is where we start.”

Their lips met in a tender kiss,

They didn’t question right or wrong.

They both knew that it was meant to be

Hearts united in just one song.

They left the beach that night

Knowing their fate was set.

Their journey had begun a long time ago
