Starsky and Hutch finally get “together.”
Looking back from where I stand tonight,
I wouldn’t change a thing about my life.
Wrong turns I had to make back in those crazy years
Could not have been mistakes
If they brought me here.
‘Cause all my roads have led me to
This night, this love I share with you.
And though the road was never smooth,
Life has made me someone who
Could be the right someone for you
I don’t regret a single broken heart.
It taught me what love is and what it’s not.
Someone must have planned our two paths would cross.
I couldn’t see it then,
But I was never lost.
‘Cause all my roads have led me to
This night, this love I share with you.
And though the road was never smooth,
Life has made me someone who
Could be the right someone for you
Detours, dead ends, endless explorations,
You were my only destination.
‘Cause all my roads have led me to
This night, this love I share with you.
And though the road was never smooth,
Life has made me someone who
Could be the right someone for you.*
Evening was coming on, creeping in on little cat’s feet, and slowly casting longer and longer shadows over everything. The street was alive with people coming home from work, cavorting on the beach or wherever people went on a day like today. It was unseasonably warm. Hutch wondered at how fast the time had gone by as he started the drive back to pick up his partner. As he neared the spot where the accident had occurred, he saw Starsky, out of the corner of his eye, talking to an extremely attractive young woman. She was leaning against the side of a building and Starsky had one arm out, supporting himself as he engaged in vivacious conversation with her. They were almost nose-to-nose, as he bent over her, obviously intent on her every word. As Hutch watched, his partner gave her a chaste kiss on the mouth.
Hutch saw red! He jumped out of the car and trotted over to the couple. Grabbing Starsky by the arm, he jerked him around with enough force to cause the man to wince and bring his hand up to clasp his bandaged forehead. The dark-haired man looked astonished by Hutch’s actions. But he could see by the flush on his friend’s face that he was angry about something. He chose not to air it in public and said nothing. Calling out, “See you around, schweetheart,” he allowed Hutch to drag him by one arm to the car and slam him down into the seat.
“What the hell was that all about?” he asked as soon as he caught his breath.
“We’re supposed to be ‘in love,’ yet the first time I leave you alone, I come back to find you coming on to some floozy!” Hutch fumed.
Starsky chuckled. It was the wrong thing to do. Hutch stopped the car and ordered him out onto the street.
“Aw, come on, babe, I do love you, passionately, I might add. Old habits die hard.” The significance of what he’d just said hit him and he smiled. “Not that kinda hard. Besides where do you get off calling somebody a floozy? I never heard you use that word since I’ve known you.”
“W-well, you sure looked like you were putting the moves on her.”
“Didn’t you recognize her? That was Dee O’Reilly. I usta go out with her.” He glanced at the murderous look on Hutch’s face and realized he just might have made things worse for himself. Dee O’Reilly had delighted in giving Hutch parking tickets when she was a meter maid, and finding out that Starsky was dating her hadn’t set well, being somewhat akin to his best friend fraternizing with the enemy.
“She’s in vice at the 14th now, you know. Just got promoted. I was only wishing her well.”
“Did you have to kiss her?”
“No, but it wasn’t any passionate thing. Just a kiss between old friends.”
“You were leaning close enough to suck all the air out of her nostrils,” Hutch felt stupid, but didn’t want to give up.
“I was leaning against the building so I wouldn’t fall down on top of her. My head hurt and I felt a little dizzy. If you had come along a few seconds later, you probably would have seen her helping me sit down on the curb, ’cause that’s what I was about to ask her to do. Look, if you’re gonna be the jealous lover type, let me know and I’ll walk on the other side of the street every time a gorgeous babe walks by.”
Hutch smiled. “Well, it is going to be awfully hard…um, difficult to imagine the great stud being put out to pasture as far as the mares are concerned.”
“Ouch, that makes me sound a little old. Where you’re concerned, don’t ever consider me over the hill. I just hope you can keep up with me in the love-making department.”
“Me too, I don’t want you going off with one of those ‘floozies.'” Hutch chuckled, over his pique now. “I’m sorry, Starsk, I just got the green-eyed monster and went off half cocked.”
“I’ll take half,” Starsky laughed. “Hell, I’ll even take a quarter of it at this point. How long ya gonna keep me waiting, babe?”
They’d arrived at Hutch’s place, so he didn’t have to answer that question. Once they were in the apartment, Starsky found himself slammed against the wall, with Hutch’s lips colliding with his, sucking, nipping, and tongue exploring every inch of his mouth. He put both hands on the blond’s chest and pushed him away with a mighty heave.
“Hey, you didn’t want to do this yet. Now you’re all over me, as my grandpa would say, ‘like a sparrow on a horse turd.’ What’s with you, Hutch?”
The colloquialism did Hutch in. He laughed until his eyes watered. Starsky, not to be outdone, started giggling so hard that his head hurt, not to mention his ribs, which began to ache from the uproarious laughter. Finally he was able to compose himself.
“I need a couple aspirin, Hutch, my head hurts.”
Instantly contrite, Hutch brought him a glass of water and three aspirin.
Starsky looked at the glass of water distastefully.
“Don’t you have any beer?”
“You shouldn’t be drinking beer after a head injury.”
“You’ve already dragged me out of the ambulance, scared me to death by yanking me non-too-gently to your car, bounced me off your car seat, not to mention slamming me against your wall, while you did a thorough check for cavities. What difference will a beer make?”
“Sorry, I guess you’re right.” Hutch took the glass to the kitchen and came back with two bottles of beer. Handing one to Starsky, he popped the other one, and then flopped down on the couch beside his partner.
“I’ve changed my mind, Starsk. I don’t want to wait any longer. When I saw that body lying beside your car, I thought it was you. Because of my stubbornness, we might never have made love and I’d have missed out. I would have spent the rest of my life regretting it.”
“Aw Hutch, it wasn’t me, so don’t beat yourself up about it.”
“You know, nobody’s ever really loved me for myself. Maybe Gillian did, but we’ll never know now. My folks were too busy making money to spend much attention on me and Val was too busy spending the money to care. My life was all about getting ahead, making the big bucks, until I walked into that room in the dormitory and saw that beautiful face of yours. I think I fell in love with you right then, but just didn’t realize it. You’re the only one in my life who’s ever loved me unconditionally. You should have blown up at me the way I treated you today, but you didn’t. Why, Starsk?”
“Just ’cause I love you, babe. I understand you, probably better than you know yourself.”
“Yeah, I guess you do. How’s your head?”
“Better, I think I’ll live.”
Hutch jumped up off the couch and grabbed his hand.
“Good, ’cause I can’t wait any longer.”
Pulling his partner to his feet, he set off for the bedroom, hauling the other man behind him. Once there, he pushed the brunet down on the bed and sat down next to him.
Hutch captured his mouth and began kissing him, gently, tenderly this time. He tangled his fingers in the dark, curly hair, trying hard not to touch the bandaged wound. Starsky, in turn, wound himself tightly around him, tongue wrestling with the blonds, gently probing and exploring, rubbing up and down his back from his neck to his ass, smiling, difficult to do with Hutch’s tongue down his throat, as his partner gasped with surprise.
Starsky pulled away first.
“Blondie, you’ve got way too many clothes on.” He unbuttoned Hutch’s shirt and slid it down his shoulders. Working on the mans jeans, Starsky gasped himself as he felt Hutch turn his attention and his mouth on his neck, suckling and running his tongue up to Starsky’s ear and licking the inside of the delicate shell-like appendage..
“Hutch, you’re gonna give me a hickey!”
“I’ve got enough turtlenecks in my closet. Live with it.”
Starsky succeeded in getting Hutch’s jeans unfastened and prodded him to rise up so he could get them off of him. Then he pushed him back on the bed.
He stood up and started slowly removing his own clothes, but he wasn’t fast enough for Hutch, and with a growl, he leaped from the bed and grabbing the jeans that were plastered on his partner, yanked them down. He was well aware that Starsky eschewed underwear, having caught himself looking often enough. When the jeans came off, Starsky’s dusky erect cock leaped free, happy to be unconfined.
Hutch pulled Starsky down on top of him on the bed and used his mouth on every part of his lover’s body that he could reach. Starsky struggled to break free and succeeded in yanking Hutch’s boxers off and discovering the angry red monster that popped out at him.
Cupping each other’s buttocks, they found a rhythm and rubbing, kissing, sucking, they found their release.
Reluctant to let go, they held each other until their breathing returned to normal. Shyly, their eyes met. They each had a smile of wonder on their face.
A thought occurred to Hutch. “Baby, why did you want to tell me my horoscope?”
“Just ’cause it said a tall, dark and handsome man was going to feature prominently in your life today.”
“Nailed that one, didn’t it?”
Starsky’s eyes were fluttering and he muttered, “Nail- a phallic-shaped object used to pound into another surface, with the general result being bonding tightly together….”
Hutch chuckled. “My love, you are going to be a handful.”
Then his eyes too, closed in sleep
