There are bonds that keep us earthbound
and a man’s soul’s left to bleed
There are bonds that rend the gentled heart
by relentless, spurning greed
There are bonds that keep us longing
for hearth, and hold, and home
There are bonds of unanswered mourning
for a love we’ve never known
There are bonds that stir the lion’s heart
and ache for innocent blood
There are bonds that turn our wills to dust
regret drowns me in her flood
So many bonds constrain me
my heart heavy, my soul earth-bound
But one bond yet I will cherish
offering a freedom I had never found
This bond that bids me sacrifice
stay the course ‘til life is through
As none so sovereign is friendship’s bond
that binds my life to you
