Sometimes words aren’t necessary.
Loss and sadness – friendship and comfort.
Hutch listened to the wind. It seemed to be whispering words of loss and sadness. The waves looked cold and rough and the hazy sunshine, trying to push its way through the clouds, did nothing to raise his mood.
The gentle hand on his shoulder should have made him startle but it didn’t. Starsky’s presence was always expected even when it was unexpected.
“How’d you know where I would be?” Hutch asked.
Starsky shrugged as if it was a stupid question and perhaps it was. After all, Starsky was the one person who knew him better than he knew himself.
“You need to walk more?” Starsky asked. “Or are you about ready to eat?”
“What did you have in mind?”
“How about that new place along the street from you? Steak and a salad sounds good about now.”
Hutch suddenly realised he was hungry so he nodded. He stared out to sea for a moment longer. The sun had finally gained victory and the sea appeared warmer. He listened to the wind as its tone changed and it sang about friendship and comfort.
Hutch nodded to himself and then turned towards Starsky, saying, “Let’s go, partner…and thanks.”
“What for?”
Hutch shrugged as if it was a stupid question and perhaps it was.
