“How could you have known I was going…?”
“You never said it before.”
“Said what?”
“Goodbye… You never said it.”
“Before…c’mon, Hutch, sure I said it lots of times before…”
“N…no, Starsk, you never did…ok, maybe once or twice, but normally when we parted, it was just a ‘see ya later,’ ‘take care,’ or something else like that. but never…”
“Goodbye.”
“Yeah.”
“They all mean the same thing, you know.”
“What does?”
“See ya later, take care… they all mean goodbye, Hutch…they all mean the…”
“Same thing.”
“Yeah.”
“But they don’t, Starsk. ‘See you later,’ ‘take care,’ ‘meet you at home…’ They all say, ‘hey, I’ll see you again soon.’ Goodbye is final…says ‘I’ll never see you again,’ or, ‘it will be awhile between visits”…a long while. It’s so…”
“Final.”
“Final.”
“But I’m still here, maybe not the way…”
“NO YOU’RE NOT… You… You’re… ”
“Dead.”
“Dead.”
“Ok, but I’m still here…where it counts. I haven’t le…”
“Yes, you did… You said goodbye and walked out of that room. You left me, Starsk… just like tha…I…I never had a chance to say…”
“Goodbye.”
“Yeah.”
“Do you trust me, Hutch?”
“Of course, why would you ask me…?”
“Do you trust enough to believe me when I pledged never to leave no matter what…”
“But you broke that… You did leave…”
“That’s not what I am asking, Blondie.”
“I do trust you. But…”
“No buts, just yes or no.”
“Yes.”
“Good, Me and Thee, Hutch.”
“Me and Thee.”
“Always?”
“Always and…”
