Hutch was strumming random chords on his guitar.

“Play B flat, will you?” Starsky called.

“Huh?”

“TV says black holes hum that note, and I wanna hear it.”

This story originally appeared in the SHareCon 2004 zine.

Hutch was strumming random chords on his guitar.

“Play B flat, will you?” Starsky called.

“Huh?”

“TV says black holes hum that note, and I wanna hear it.”

“What psychic came up with that?” But Hutch did play a B flat alone, then in a chord.

“No, smart ass, a NASA telescope heard one.”

Shaking his head, Hutch put the guitar down.

Starsky went on, “‘S’like 57 octaves lower than anybody can hear anyway.”

Speaking of hearing, Starsky seemed deafer these days–nobody could sneak up on him this way 20 years ago. “Are you deep noting me?” Hutch murmured in his partner’s ear.

Though ear play always made Starsky wriggle, this time his “Hu-utch–” was half disgust at the pun. “You just can’t be funny. Give it up.”

“You tell me a black hole sings B flat and I can’t be funny? The universe has musical fruit and I–”

“I’ll give you be-flat-black-hole,” said Starsky, pouncing, which was the whole idea.

Argument as foreplay never got old.
