Hello, dear reader. Here it is … our fourth zine in four years! Who knew? Well, to be totally accurate, this one makes 5 zines in 21 years. Our first zine together, “Who You Know, What You Know, and How You Know It,” which we produced in 1983, is now 21 years old. “Who You Know…” is now old enough to own slash zines of its own!

For those of you who may be new to the world of zines, or who have never produced a zine of your own, I can say that it is truly a labor of love. But it is definitely a lot of work. “Who You Know…” was produced in the ‘olden days,’ before computers. I spent many months typing (on large over-sized pages, on Black Beauty, my old Selectric typewriter), then retyping or cutting and pasting when revisions were needed, plus hours spent producing titles and graphics in presstype, then offset printing, and then a huge collating/binding party with many fans and friends shanghaied for the occasion. This zine that you now hold in your hands was produced on Lucy’s dazzling new printer, and she did all the production work herself, including the binding. I don’t understand any of the highly technical computer stuff, and I’m more than a little impressed. I hope you will be too. But hugs and thank yous to Lucy for all of her hard work.

The biggest thanks to our contributing writers and artists. There are wonderful stories and artwork in this zine, and I’m continually amazed and grateful for the wonderful, and apparently bottomless, well of talent we have in the fandom. Thanks to all of you.

And if Lucy has anything to say about it, I’ll see you again this time next year.

Lucy’s Editorial

When Dana handed me a considerable stack of pages at Zebra Con last year, I really wasn’t thinking about doing another zine. By the next day, all that had changed… you hold the result of her nudge.

It has been a delightful process. The authors here have been exceptional to work with, and the artists have done a superb job with the magic that they do so well. Elaine has been, as always, a taskmaster, but worth every edit and re-edit and re-edit. She definitely has the most patience of any person on the planet (particularly with this writer). And poor thing, she has to do my professional stuff as well.

Those of you who see the finished product can’t fully appreciate the work it took to get here. I commend every one of the contributors. They were incredible to work with. All was done with grace and expediency and I hope they join me in the pride I now feel.

It’s certainly been the production of “new” … new computer, new printer, new photoshop, new Quark, and even a new me, who never wanted to learn any of those things.

Please readers, LOC. It is the only way we as writers can grow. Let the artists know what you felt as you looked at their work, how it moved you. And I think we have some of the most moving pieces I’ve seen in a while that range from the expertly hand-drawn to computer generated. Now enjoy. This is, after all, the purpose.
