All thumbs and blushes.
Like Atlas with the world on his shoulders.
I thought, “He’ll never be a cop.”
I thought, “He won’t make it through.”
You stammered all your answers.
You muttered every word.
A few weeks went by.
Some time went on.
You got your sea legs.
You smiled sometimes.
You started shining, like a brand-new penny.
You started talking and never shut up.
We met at a party, once you pulled your head out of the books.
We met at a party, once you let down your guard.
It took you long enough to decide how to introduce yourself.
You paused, as though you might give me a fake name.
Then you smiled, real big, and said, “Ken Hutchinson.”
