Stakeout

Starsky and Hutch resist temptation on a stakeout.

Hutch could have sworn that he had just laid down when a kernel of popcorn bounced off his forehead.

He woke up fully when a second one hit his nose. Only Starsky would bring popcorn to a stakeout. It would not surprise him at all if his partner had installed a soda fountain in the trunk or a candy machine in the dashboard. Although caffeine and sugar sounded like a wonderful idea right about now.

“Wake up, sleeping Blondie, ” Starsky said, voice full of fake cheer.

“M’awake,” Hutch claimed, in an attempt to forestall another missile from the front of the Torino. “What time is it?” he asked, as he shrugged off the jacket that had been keeping him warm and sat up in the backseat.

“Two-thirty,” Starsky replied around a yawn. Four and a half more hours to go until dawn and relief from this lousy stakeout. “Not a creature has stirred, let alone tried to move any contraband. Your turn. You’re gonna have to come up here first though, unless you want me landing in your lap back there.”

Half-asleep, Hutch somehow managed to climb over into the front passenger seat without banging his head on the roof or kicking his partner in the chest, but in doing so gave Starsky the perfect angle to cop a feel.

“You better not be starting anything we can’t finish.”

“Just giving ya ideas for later. There’s half a thermos of coffee left and some granola bars if you want them.”

“Thanks, Starsk,” Hutch said, stealing a quick kiss as the other man deftly maneuvered his way into the back seat.

“Although I could entertain you with stories of what I am going to do to you when we get home.”

Tempting as the idea was, Starsky needed to get some sleep and Hutch needed to pay attention to the storefront across the street. If they missed Lockhart and his goons in action they’d be apologizing to Dobey and filling out paperwork for weeks.

“Say good night, Starsky.”

“Good night, Starsky,” came the obliging mumble from the back seat as Hutch reached for the binoculars and settled in for the duration.
