I brought to you this early dawn
a single long-stemmed rose ~
The night had all too swiftly gone;
the pale light robbed repose
Away from your sleep-clouded eyes.
I watched you slowly wake:
You paused in your uncertain rise,
brushed softly by the break
Of day ~ discovered then the dew
upon your pillow, dropped
By scarlet petals. Then I knew
~ all time had simply stopped ~
Your smile eclipsed the morning glow;
no rival was the sun
To you. The sweet perfume and slow
caress of blossoms ~ one,
Across your cheek ~ were heady. I
remain astounded, moved,
To think of this clear vision. Why
would love be so well-proved?
For her red beauty, one chaste kiss;
for me, one more, to pay,
Such mornings pass in golden bliss…

Time stopped again today.

In wake of one sharp blinding flash
the blossoms fade from sight;
The clustered dew upon your lash
that glitters in the light
Implores my soul to keep to shore
~ Must I abandon you?
The dark tide sweeps me onward more
and bears me further to
A dim horizon. On my own
I scan the ocean swell
And find no bright relief. Alone,
my sorrow flows too well
And sets my mind adrift. These crafts
~ their only cargo, dust ~
Lie wasted; dancing, hollow shafts
of wan light burn. I must
Turn back these tattered sailing ships
from cold and stagnant sea ~
For ah! my love, your rose-touched lips
and blue eyes call to me.
